Alexander Gavrylyuk soloist & Fabian Russell cond. | Sir Ian Turbott Auditorium, University of Western Sydney, Parramatta South Campus
WestPhil is proud to present Harmonies of Hope: A WestPhil Orchestral Journey, an extraordinary project this October that offers talented high school and early tertiary musicians a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with some of the world's finest musicians. This special initiative is made possible through our partnership with the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS), with generous support from the James N. Kirby Foundation, and hosted by Western Sydney University (WSU).
Project Highlights
• Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21: Directed by Alexander Gavrylyuk, who will direct this iconic concerto from the piano.
• World Premiere of a New Piano Concerto: Conducted by Fabian Russell, this new work, "Variations on a Ukrainian Theme" by David Paterson, will be performed by Gavrylyuk and the participants, alongside talented Ukrainian music students from the refugee community. This powerful piece is based on the Ukrainian folksong "Oy u vyshnevomu sadu" (Oh, in the cherry orchard) and is set to be a moving tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
